Class Observation
Have you ever had this visual of an object being a certain way but then find out that it’s completely different from what you expected it to be. The microeconomic class is at the auditorium in room 1/214. Auditorium is a huge room where there could be 100 students or more. I decided to come to this class due to my friends being there and me having a period off. The room seems clean, the air is fresh, the projector and microphone are working well. Having a representable classroom that is clean is a huge deal to certain people and gives this perspective about the class being important. The air makes students focus, less stressful and better interaction. The ceiling has a bunch of lights on since there’s no window in the room. I don’t know about the reset of the people but for me having no window means a depressing classroom because there’s no outside view and feels like you are stuck in a cage. Having the resources of a class prepared and ready to go will make students consume more knowledge and understand the lesson well because the students could listen to the teacher clearly. As the class starts there’s this red roses skirt, shirt seen as the sky color of a summer day, shoes dark as the shadows and the presence of a lion king walking through was how it felt when the professor, Ms. Shankar, entered. The crowd was loud as a zoo park and then silent as the night was the noise like. Which made me somewhat laugh because the tone of the class changed due to the voice tone of the teacher. Students asking for the code that the teacher put on the projector. As I sat down for the whole class there was this strange vibe of people not caring and caring at the same time. This vibe came through me when I was chilling for fifteen minutes in the classroom. In this class microeconomics the teacher is talking the whole time which is boring. The lesson was basically about the factors that cause a decrease and increase of consumer surplus, marginal utility, ,midpoint method, income effect, and cross price elasticity. Everything is shown in a projector and students had to download this app called Top Hat. Top hat is an app where teachers could post the slides or notes that are being taught during the class and have the homework sources, review, attendance and gradebook shown as well. This was a boring class because the students are only hearing the teacher’s voice during the whole period and not having other individuals interact or conversate of what their thoughts might be about the topic that is being taught. What intrigued me was that students are either talking, playing with their phones, or texting. This was interesting for me because college for me was something that everyone should take seriously but in this scenario it wasn’t the case. So the auditorium is big and students either choose to sit in the front or back of the class. The front section is mostly known for the individuals that pay attention and want the best for them for their grades. The back section is known for chilling, vibing with other people, and not really focusing in class. I got this information by observing the behavior of the people from where these individuals are sitting. Then, the teacher is upset because few people pay attention to the lesson of the day and the back of the class is loud. Later on, the teacher talks about the practice mock exam and tells the students that the score they received conveys whether they are ready or not to pass the midterm that is coming up. Then she posts a quiz which pisses people off since they took a mock practice last class. As this is going on, I interviewed this kid called Albert. Albert is this kid that I met in my first semester of my freshmen year due another friend called Rasheed in macroeconomics. I was asking questions about the lesson of the class since it’s my first time being there, the grading criteria and the homework assignments. Homework assignments are not really taken seriously which is why the teacher does this. This student doesn’t even care what’s going on because as I talk to him he’s playing this mobile game on his phone and then transition to the app called Top Hat to start guessing on the quiz. This distrubed me because students like Albert should be more concerned about their studies. Top hat is this app that makes the teacher’s life easier and the students as well by not having to carry a textbook. As class ended everyone was happy and ready to leave. Overall, this was an interesting setting and a great moment to jot down poin and open my eyes of taking college more seriously as well.
