Dear Creaney,

Intro Letter Assignment 1
Hi my name is Brayan Barreto. As you may know already, I’m from the Bronx, male and go to city college. Going back to where I live, South Bronx, I basically grew up with an unprofessional attire and this mindset of wearing clothes that make you feel comfortable. Adding on, I also have this mindset of who you rock with and the idea of trust being tough to apply to someone. I’m mexican, speak spanish and english so basically I’m bilingual. Being bilingual is an ability for me because human beings like me are capable of consuming knowledge of a new language and making use of it which gives me advantages in life. Another ability is to have knowledge of google and microsoft words because these two factors are utilized for a writing assignment. I tend to get nervous whenever I have to speak in front of many people or share my idea in class which is one of my fears. I’m not really a fan of doing homework or any sort of test because pressure is added to your mindset. Pressure is having this idea of doing everything correctly and fulfilling the expectations given. This pressure constructs this vibe of doing poorly since you don’t feel very sure about your opinions and choices. Growing up I went to middle school and highschool in the Bronx so I grew up with black people and hispanic people for almost all my life. I’m catholic so religion is a huge deal with my culture and my parents are always bossy about church days, and other big events about Jesus. Adding to religion, I don’t fully follow the norms about my religion but I do demonstrate respect whenever I’m attending church or an event ( just wanted to point this out ). I don’t play sports in school or outside because joining an activity in school made me get home at 7 pm and doing sport outside of school was taking some of my time with my family. I do play soccer and basketball for fun so I’m not trash either. Another hobby of mine is sleeping a lot and playing games. In addition, my major is business, but I haven’t really focused on what category I’m really going to be focused on. Something that gets me excited about this class is getting to know what social science is mostly about and how social science affects society. Another excitement is getting to know more people in college.
I believe that social science is an individual that exposes the action taken from a group of people toward another group of people. I got this idea from reading the article “ The Role of the Behavioral Scientist in the Civil Rights Movement ‘’ by Dr. Martin Luther King. When I was reading this article about Dr.King, something that stood out/ was highlighted was leadership, people not helping each other ( step up ), and social and political action impacting society. These words made me come up with my idea of what I believe social scientists are because at that time there was segregation between white and people of color in society in order to have this gap of supremacy. This leads to the question of “ What do I imagine is the role of the social scientist today in 2017 ? ‘’ So today the year is 2020, 3 years back, I think social scientists in 2017 roles are to analyze or go into deep political situations since social scientists are those who exposed a relationship between two different groups. In class, thursday 1/30/20, the social science tool box is quantitative research and qualitative research. Quantitative research is data sample to make generalizations of people. Qualitative research gathers non-numerical data, more cultural stuff in language, more deep setting, problems and why. Based on this information I feel like taking this role would be very stressful and hard work in order to gather an efficient amount of background to explain something. I’m nervous about what topic we would be researching and if we have to do a presentation in class about the information collected. I’m nervous about the topic an essay would be assigned to. I’m curious about what we are going to be learning in class and how this all connects to the idea of social science. Some tasks that I’m curious about are the homework for Tuesday on, february 4, because the reading is about a research method which means that I’m going to be finding out about a way or something interesting about research. I’m still confused about the idea of social science, what’s the real definition of social science for this class, and how the classroom information connects to the homework. I’m somewhat interested in studying humans. Something that I do want to learn is how your cultural background plays a role in who you are. I don’t quite understand how this connects to my identity ( if we are referring to social science or Dr. king reading). If we are talking about social science then the way I dress and greet people is due to my environment or surroundings that plays a role in how I present myself. I don’t really know if my personality or cultural background could help me with this work.
Sincerely
Brayan Barreto
